Project Explanation - Drinking Culture at HYU

Hey guys!

I am currently on a group video project with couple of my peers. The topic for the project is 'Drinking Culture at Hanyang University'. Basically, we are going to examine the drinking culture of students at Hanyang and find out how students at Hanyang really drink. Upon that, we are also going to find out hot places where our students drink most.

Our research will be conducted with a questionnaire and using them for our interviews, as well as a survey that will be spread out to a wider audience of Hanyang students. To make the video more interesting and entertaining, we will choose one person who can drink the most and actually bring him or her to the bar. We will capture the drunk look and different behaviors of the person. At the end, we will give a strong message, "Drinking too much is not good; let us build up a good drinking culture at Hanyang University!"

My role in the project will be interviewing and video editing. After the research and video capturing has been done, I will be putting them all together and make a good video through either Windows Movie Maker or iMovie on my Mac.

The goal of our project is to tell people about the drinking culture at Hanyang, hot drinking places around the campus and to give a message to promote a good drinking culture.

How Hanyang University Feels Like in Real Life!

I have made a short video that briefly goes through the campus of Hanyang University. I took some pictures of it myself and I wanted to show it to you. I have also included a voice recording, talking about my impressions on the photos to briefly describe how I feel about the look of the campus. I was quite amazed at how many different emotions I could feel from different parts of the campus, if I paid more attention.

Universal Welfare or Selective Welfare?

Social welfare has been on a constant controversy in democratic and capitalistic countries, and the major issue countries are faced with is whether they should enact more policies based on universal welfare or selective welfare. Welfare has become one of the most important system to have in a democratic country and some heavy government expenditures are placed on social welfare policies. The government of the United States have spent $3.7 trillion from 2009 to 2013(weeklystandard.com) just on welfare policies. This just shows how important the welfare system is in maintaining a country. With the governments deciding which system to use between universal welfare or selective welfare, they can change the future of their own countries.

General Information of Universal and Selective Welfare

Universal Welfare: Social welfare system that is applied to all citizens of the country,

Selective Welfare: Social welfare system that is applied to a specific group of people within a country.

There are clear differences between the two. While universal welfare targets the entire population, hence spending money to provide welfare for all, selective welfare targets specific groups who are usually poor and needier.

Benefits from Universal Welfare -       Provides welfare for everyone, thus becoming a welfare state -       Fulfils the logic of Declaration of Human Rights that human beings should be provided with the least amount of food, clothing and shelter to survive -       The entire population’s happiness rises -       Higher chances of everyone being better off, fewer chances of them becoming poorer

Losses from Universal Welfare -       Less efficient, as richer families also get welfare services from the government -       Much more government expenditures are required -       Tax rate could be increased more due to high government expenditures compared to times when the government is adopting selective welfare -       More possibilities of higher and middle class people abusing the universal welfare

Benefits from Selective Welfare -       Provides welfare for a specific group of people especially those who are in need, hence making government expenditures efficient -       No unnecessary payments made on high and middle class houses

Losses from Selective Welfare -       Not everyone benefits from the welfare policy, therefore making possibilities that the government could miss a certain part of the group -       Happiness rate is not affected heavily more than utilizing universal welfare. -       Some people could disagree over the ranges of people that are chosen for selective welfare policies

A Case of Controversy on Universal Welfare

One of the most controversial issues around the world on universal welfare policy is the policy of free meals in schools, which recently was brought up quite heavily in South Korea. In South Korea, it is mandatory for its citizens to attend elementary schools and middle schools, and some people brought up with the issue that meals should be free in schools since people must attend them. Therefore, the Korean government has adopted a universal welfare policy around free meals for every student attending elementary and middle school. It was the biggest welfare issue that has risen in Korea today, and some provinces within Korea has stopped the policy due to the exceeding government expenditures as well as school expenditures. Some schools have been on deficit due to not enough support from governments but having to provide meals for all students for free.

A Case of Controversy on Selective Welfare

For selective welfare system, one of the most controversial issues of it is the policy of providing free subway tickets for elderly people over the age of 65 in South Korea. The government company in trains and subways, KORAIL, has been on a severe deficit for a long time on subway enterprise, due to not only cheap ticket prices but with the welfare policy of providing free tickets for elderly people. Korean subway line 1 goes all the way to Chungcheong-do, which is more than 3 hours away. Yet for elderly people, this line is also free, thus people from Chungcheong-do can travel to Seoul whenever they want to. Many people have been arguing over the free tickets issue, and currently the government is still keeping the policy running.

My Approaches to the Social Welfare Policy

I was always interested on the topic of social welfare policy in democratic and capitalistic countries. From my research and life experiences, I am personally in favor of the selective welfare system.

What selective welfare system can achieve in my opinion is truly providing service to those who are in need. The aim of social welfare in the first place was to help the poor to help them become richer and make economic contributions to the nation, however universal welfare, which provides service to all, goes against this aim. Higher class families do not require any welfare system to benefit from because they can support themselves. In my opinion, governments are spending unnecessarily on these rich houses which leads to all kinds of economical issues such as increased taxes and more burden for the working younger generations of the nation. I personally have seen some elderly people constumed with rich jewelries taking subways for free, and we are the ones paying for them by paying more taxes. I think this is neither fair nor economoy-efficient. I think it is time for us to remind us on the true meaning of welfare and re-think about our current situation on welfare policies. The government could be much better off with providing selective welfare, which provides services for only the ones who are truly in need.

My Thoughts on Facebook and Other Social Networking Sites

Well, social networking sites have truly changed the way we live our lives.

I can still remember the days where there were no smartphones around, Facebook or Twitter, and the only practical form of communication on the internet was messenger applications and emails. Today, most people within cities are carrying their smartphones to constantly stay connected online with social networking services, even primary school kids. The current world is has advanced and developed dramatically compared to just ten years ago.

People nowadays, especially teenagers and younger generations, are so deeply used to getting on the internet and being connected on these social networking services that they almost cannot live without them. They almost take them for granted. Even for myself, without Facebook, I cannot imagine trying to connect with a friend living overseas or whom I have not seen for a long time. While these new technologies gave us pleasures in communicating with others and made them so much more convenient, I think there are downsides.

I constantly need to hold my phone to get updates, constantly need to check if I have a notification from someone. I almost feel like I sold my life on social networking. Although it is very important to stay connected regardless of time and distance, I feel like I am imprisoned in the world of internet. Without them, I feel worried and cannot let go of my smartphone. I think this is a serious problem for today's citizens. What services like Facebook and Twitter has caused us is that people feel almost lonely when they are separated from using these services for hours. Compared to the past when people had much more leisurely times, people in today's society are so stressed with human relationships that they never really have time on their own.

General Information and History of Facebook

Hey guys, I wanted to provide you some general information and history about Facebook.

Facebook is an online social networking site that many people use today. It was launched on February 4, 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg, the current founder and CEO of the company. Zuckerberg was a Harvard university student when he launched the website, but soon after his sophomore year, he left his school to spend more time on his company Facebook and expand it.

Facebook was originally created to provide social networking between Harvard students only, however he expanded it to universities in Boston area, the Ivy League, Stanford University and then eventually to the entire world. The users can post texts, photos, videos, play games, join groups and become friends with others to constantly be connected to each other.

Today, it is considered one of the most powerful and influential source of mass media, and with 1.3 billion active users around the world as of 2014, this company is changing the world nothing like in the past. The entire company is worth $212 billion.

Hey guys! I found some cool websites with five different purposes, which are entertaining, informative, persuasive, evaluative or expressive.

Entertaining Website: Miniclip (http://www.miniclip.com)

This is a website that has tons of flash games to play and millions of people looking for entertainment visit this website. Miniclip is very famous around the world and it gained huge popularity for providing people with almost every game available on the web. With a wide range of game genres, it is a very good website to entertain yourself.

Informative Website: Macrumors (http://www.macrumors.com)

Macrumors is a website that provides information on technology, mostly around Apple products and some of its rival companies. The word 'Macrumors' comes from the Apple computer model name 'Mac' and the word 'rumors', which is essentially aimed to give information about Apple. If you are a technology fan or an Apple fan, this is a highly efficient website that can fill you in with your information needs.

Persuasive Website: Saenuri Political Party (http://saeunriparty.kr)

This website is run by a political party in Korea called 'Saenuri', which has similar characteristics to the Republican party in the United States. This website obviously displays who they are and what they do, and on the front page, they try to promote themselves as much as possible to citizens in order to gain popularity and more votes. Their aims and goals are shown to persuade people to vote for them.

Evaluative Website: UnderKG (http://www.underkg.co.kr)

UnderKG is a somewhat unknown website that reviews new technological devices or services from many different companies like Samsung, LG, Apple, Sony, etc. The man who reviews those new products is called F717, and he is very critical on all products, talking more about negative sides than positive sides. He is infamous for such critical reviews, and his mean personality makes this evaluative website even more interesting.

Expressive Website: Penzu (https://penzu.com)

Penzu is a very simple website that allows you to write online diaries and journals. With ease of putting up photos and videos, your diary has never been more fun! It is completely private website, and removes some of the disadvantages that the old paper-based diary had. You can search out of many diaries or even tag a specific place or person. This website makes you to write to express yourself freely.

Infographic: Messi vs Ronaldo

Hey! I'm back with an infographic that my partner and I created. It is about Messi versus Ronaldo, and if you are a soccer fan, they are superstars! :D

The real faces of Messi and Ronaldo at the top immediately gives the viewer the idea that this infographic is a comparison between Messi and Ronaldo, as they are the two best soccer players in the entire world. On the back of the statistics, we used very light blue and white colors to improve readability but also to not look too boring. For the bars, we used different colors for two players each to visually make distinction between two statistics. Messi wears a blue-red colored uniform, and Ronaldo mostly wears a white-colored uniform. We used national flags at the bottom for both players to show where they were from, their playing numbers as well as their soccer teams. To make the statistics simpler to see, we removed complicated axis which many statistics have in common, and instead we made them into simple bars for our viewers' easy readability.
